I recently saw a friend's exciting new home entertainment hub, which included aSoulaca Smart Touch TV, and after scrolling through the television's Netflix play list, we“touched” on a new action movie from Korea called Uprising.
Wow, what we saw were spectacular visuals, and we heard riveting and immersive sound. More below about Soulaca's awesomely cool waterproof, mirror and smart TVs. But, first, a bit about Uprising, the new action drama from Park Chan-wook and Kim Sang-man.
Korean films are increasingly making inroads into the global film industry. For example, feature movies like Parasite have won international awards, including the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the Best Picture award at the Oscars. Additionally, South Korean film distributors are partnering with giant American studios like MGM and Universal to remake Korean hits and develop new films for release in the US. As a result, Korean films are increasingly available on streaming platforms like Netflix.
Which is where Uprising comes up.
The two acclaimed South Korean filmmakers (Park Chan-wook and Kim Sang-man) serve up a daring and rousing historical adventure that takes us back to the final imperial period in Korean history. The film examines how the chaos of war, in this case the historical Imjin War, impacts the personal relationship between two childhood friends who eventually become enemies. We mostly know history for its monarchs, and rulers, for the hwarang, samurai and youxia warriors, and for big strategic military maneuvers. Uprising has all that but also takes a personal approach within the chaos of war—within the explosive action sequences, elaborate swordplay, mad military moves and horseback cavalry charges.
There have been great Asian war epics from Japan and China, like The Last Samurai and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and most recently the Emmy-winning series Shogun on Disney+. But Korea has stepped up with Uprising. Reviewers have called it “one of the most touching stories of friendship seen in a Netflix movie” and “Netflix’s answer to the Emmy-winning series Shogun,” and, also calling it “Netflix's Ghost of Tsushima.”
Korean filmmakers have become known for their mastery of genre-bending films, incorporating elements of drama, comedy, romance, action, and suspense within a single narrative. This fusion of genres not only keeps their audiences engaged but also adds textures of depth and complexity to the storytelling, which has been earning awards and success at the international Box Office.
Uprising puts this Korean offering into the epic historical war movie ballpark.
After watching Uprising, my friend and I Googled other epic movies that were listed on the Soulaca TV menu. For example, to watch other Epic Asian War movies, take a look at this IMDb list.
